The constitution is clear about what needs to happen when a United States president dies, but it fails to address what should happen if the president is alive but unable to perform their duties. In the 1960s, Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana authored the 25th amendment to lay out how a president may be deemed unfit to hold office and how the transfer of power should take place.

U.S. senators receive a number of benefits from the government, including:
Retirement benefits: Senators are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) or Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). They are fully vested after five years of service. Senators with at least five years of service may be eligible for a pension that pays two to three times more than pensions offered to similarly-salaried workers in the private sector.
