Payback. It's the grease that eases the descent into hopeless polarization. So tempting, so seemingly fair, yet so fraught with danger. Polarized people see fairness as weakness and don't reciprocate. But instead of worsening the cycle of disrespect and polarization, there is a simple but harder way forward: Do better, be seen to be doing better and have voters for the other side start to expect higher quality from their reps. It takes time. Payback is quick and easy! And allows you to vent. But are Democrats the better people, really? Or are they just as hopelessly stuck in a dark corner as the Republicans?

Great analysis Ari! I couldn't agree more, this is no normal vacancy. It's not replacing one conservative judge with another, like with Scalia, it's something that will shape US history for decades to come. McConnell should be true to his own words, and see if it's a red or blue wave. Let the voters decide the next justice. It's only fair after not even giving Merrick Garland a vote yes or no. That was straight up obstruction after Obama picked a Centrist pick that got bipartisan support.
