If I remember correctly, Dante's idea of purgatory, came from the fact that people will be punished until they repent and accept God. So while he may be patient, his patience knows eternity. In our lively times, we have a limited amount of time to come to that acceptance. If we do, we sleep peacefully until judgment. If we don't, we are "reeducated" so to speak until the day of judgment which will seem as though eternity for time does not exist except in the land of life

Notice that the Apostle Paul does not describe dead Christians as being active or alive in heaven. They are asleep—dead—until they are resurrected at Christ's second coming.
