Modern so called destroyers are actually cruisers, so question is does the USN need to fill that role between a light frigate and a corvette?
The Arleigh’s are desperately need and I think we all can agree the Constellation class frigates are to large and expensive to fulfil that role and the littoral combat ships are beyond saving at this point.
Trade protection, anti piracy, anti smuggling and other low intensity operations in peace and patrol, trade escort and trade interdiction in war.
Say 2500-3500 tons, dual 127mm/5inch gun, 2 RIM 116 and about 16-24 VLS cells. Sensors is another question. Room for a helicopter for ASW.
