Were the sacrifices forced? The attendants (both male and female) must have known that this was their destiny and would have been culturally groomed to believe in this truth. Leonard Woolley, the archaeologist, suspected that these people either poisoned themselves or had been poisoned by others. Recent evidence derived from CAT scans suggests that some of the sacrifices were likely violent. So it might have been a mix of both: forced and voluntary.

"Ah man, I loved the queen. Now how will I find a new job at my age?"
"Oh, we actually have a special retirement package in place for you."
"That's great! What is i-"

The Penn Museum has an exhibit about her and Ur.
About the attendants: they have technically sacrificed themselves, as in were willing to go, but the Penn Museum has CAT scans on the skulls of a soldier and an attendant found in the tomb that show they died from a blow to the head.

"Sacrificed themselves" ...sure they did.

I’m so glad to be born right here and right now. I’d hate to be forced to serve someone else and sacrifice myself.

I doubt they sacrificed themselves they were more than likely forced to follow her

"Sacrificed" is the PR term for "murdered" in bronze age Mesopotamia 💀

That is so sad. Imagine your whole life catering to someone probably getting treated bad and they finally die, you think you can finally move on and start a happy new life, but meanwhile they force you to die to be her servant in the afterlife for eternity. That's worse than hell, especially if she was a terrible person ... Which most emperess, queens, princesses etc were😢

As an archaeologists, I feel a lot of people in the comments forgot that blunt force trauma with an object doesn't mean it isn't ceremonial, especially if the object used itself is part of the act. I'm not saying it was consensual, but looking at similar examples you can't rule out their willingness.

Ur is where Abraham of the Bible came from. Just a fun fact because it came up in some documentary I was watching yesterday and this is only the second time I heard of it, that i remember. Weird how that happens.

People go willingly into self sacrifice, it doesn't mean that they weren't afraid. They may have known they were going to be killed, maybe they couldn't do it themselves.
