I had one of these around 1979. I started it in a glass case at the library in school and left it running for a week or so at a time. Eventually the top will stall and fall when the battery drain drops below a certain level. However you can restart with a manual spin, but the interval gets shorter before it topples over. The carbon zinc or akaline batteries do recuperate some power after the drain on it stops for a short while.

I did not quite understand that circuit, a transistor is a 3 terminal device, how were you forward biasing the base? You must of had 2 coils
