Skin Cancer How To Tell If You Have It
The ABCDE rule is a mnemonic used to help identify potential signs of skin cancer. Each letter represents a key characteristic to look for when examining a mole or other skin lesion:

A - Asymmetry: One half of the lesion looks different from the other half.
B - Border: The edges of the lesion are irregular, ragged, or blurred.
C - Color: The lesion has different colors or shades, such as black, brown, tan, white, red, or blue.
D - Diameter: The lesion is larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser), although some melanomas can be smaller.
E - Evolving: The lesion is changing in size, shape, color, or elevation.

It is important to note that not all skin cancers follow these guidelines, and some non-cancerous moles may exhibit one or more of these characteristics. If you notice any changes in your skin, including the appearance of a new mole or changes in an existing mole, it is important to have it checked by a healthcare professional.

Thank you sooo much for sharing! It is important to have your dermatologist or PCP check your skin yearly on places you can't observe. (Scalp, Back, feet, nails, etc) My mother had stage 4 melanoma-we miss her so much)

Very important and clear information, docs. 👍🏼.
I walked around with a gradually changing mole that turned into a nasty melanoma. It was surgically removed in time. I’ve been fine since then and have annual check ups.
Keep doing this good work docs.

I diagnosed myself with skin cancer. I went to the doctor for a biopsy. Dr said it was nothing to worry about. After telling me a biopsy wasn't necessary, I insisted. No shock it cancerous. Mine was a scab that wouldn't heal the size of a pencil eraser. Two surgeries later, I'm cancer free.

I have Melanoma and have had a couple of pretty serious surgeries but they were necessary. If you have any of these, as these good doctors have displayed GET THEM LOOKED AT RIGHT AWAY. They can quickly get out of control. Much easier to take care of it in an office out patient visit than a hospital visit. .

I went to a dermatologist due to concerning new lesions on my face. I was told for two years that it was not cancerous. I being a nurse insisted on a biopsy. Guess what ? Positive for cancer !Had a second lesion growing on the opposite side of my face and was informed it was not cancer. After going back and forth a biopsy was completed in this second lesion and it was another cancer lesion. How can a dermatologist miss a cancer lesion that is on the face and even questioned by the patient??? There are some people that should not be in the medical field.

I'm irish Hispanic. I get skin tags that just show up randomly in my life. So im always inspecting at home until i get to my doctor. I'll take pictures so myself and my doctor can tell if its changed at all in that time. Sometimes you'll get one that looks one way, but a few weeks later you may Psych yourself out thinking it changed when it actually hasn't. Always get them checked. Skin cancer happens almost as fast as Colin cancer. Be careful 🙏🏼
