In Part 3 we discover the full effect of the phrase “All is well!” from the title song of our Part 1 reaction:

SPOILER REVIEW AHEAD!!

Since Farhan and Raju pass their exams and get jobs we find the infamous director/professor must shave his mustache!

Here we learned so much more about our antagonist, professor/director “Virus” that it’s difficult to call him a “villain.” Like our other characters he too has a story. We learned the death of his son was also suicide. Virus is the product of a long standing norm in Indian academic culture. A norm that dictates high expectation and pursuit of honor at the potential cost of your dreams. So we now begin to see Virus as a human with flaws inflicting pain as he has received it.

But what a powerful turn around when his daughter, who goes into labor during a vicious flood and is at the mercy of the very student he despised, Rancho.
Rancho calls on all the engineering students to step up and create a means to help Pia via “video chat” to deliver the baby of her sister!

Soon the baby is born but NOT ALIVE....until...."ALL IS WELL!"

This film covers so many great themes about the human condition. It revolves around the Indian academic culture as it reflects the ever evolving concept of pedagogy. And yet we care so deeply for each of the characters. They’re beautifully rooted in friendship, love, rivalry and the pursuit of something greater than what they’ve been served.

We could talk for days on this film, for now join us in the comment section and share your thoughts and reflections on 3 Idiots.
For us it’s easily one of the best films we’ve ever seen ANYWHERE! It delivers a character rich story and revitalizes the use of a mix of genres to propel our characters onto the next twist and turn of the epic search they’re on. A true classic for us!

The death of Virus' son was mentioned in the beginning of the movie. When Joy Lobo (the student who committed suicide) asked for an extension for his project saying that he wasn't able to focus on studies because his father was ill, the Director (Virus) replied that he shouldn't have let his studies be affected. He then gives his own example saying that his son fell of a train and died but he still showed up for lecture the next day.

Actually Pia’s brother is constantly mentioned in the movie parallel to Joy specially. On the first introduction of Virus, he explained to students setting his own son as examples that his son tried entrance exams for 3-4 times yet failed compared to the students who actually do are standing in front of Virus cause they trampled on the weak ones (including his own son). Of course this explains how much must his son been pressurised to try so hard for the sake of his father. I guess the same year his son committed suicide due to over pressure. Of course he knew there was no chance in talking to his father so he just left behind a suicide note in which he explains his trauma and true passion. Either he himself made it look like an accident as to not guilt-trip his family or his sisters just hide it thinking their father wouldn’t be able to take it. Then came Joy Lobo who asked for extension cause he couldn’t concentrate for 2 months after his dad’s stroke, in response to which Virus replied “my son died on Sunday and on Monday morning I came in here to give lecture so don’t give me that bullshit”. Of course mental pain mechanism’s a concept that elders in Asia didn’t give a damn about at that time that non deals with the pain in the same way workaholics or other tough people does. Rancho was clearly the first to question the corrupt, hypocritical system and even explains how psychologically fucked up it all is “It’s not suicide but murder”. Meanwhile in this time Pia started to get along with Rancho and his friends, Rancho was so out of league for her and showed her new perspectives about life and people specifically regards people like her dad and Suhas (her fiancé) and she considered Farhan & Raju like her own brother. Raju’s attempted suicide was enough to trigger her memories about her brother and Virus going along to try and fail him on purpose was the breaking point of her actions and she burst out and reveals about the suicide of her brother and how he was going to let another family feel the loss of their only son. The whole “it was not suicide but murder” came full circle. If not for the factors such as Rancho’s continuous backfires at Virus’s ideology, multiple suicide cases and Mona giving birth after unexpected time, Virus would’ve never realised his own mistakes. His own son’s death would’ve meant nothing to him if he discovered it sooner. It was the best reveal for conclusion that changed the arc of his character.
Also please react to Taar e Zameen Par (Like Stars on Earth) and PK. Both movies like 3 idiots touch on sensitive topics and stars Aamir Khan.

Regarding the question why Pia's sister's husband was not present : mostly because in India girls visit their Maternal homes often after marriage and they stay there for few months after pregnancy.

Note : (To your father) Pia's brother was mentioned in first half when Joy was talking to the Professor about giving him an extension for his project after his dad's stroke as he couldn't concentrate on his studies, the professor said "On one Sunday, my Son died and on the next Monday morning, I was back in college giving lecture, so don't give me this "couldn't concentrate on studies BS".

This has to be one of the best reactions on this movie on YouTube. Kudos! Regarding the revelation of the director’s son, there was a moment earlier in the film where Virus is addressing the students on the first day. He tells them about their impressive achievement to have gotten into ICE, and that his own son had applied thrice but was rejected every time. And he follows that line by “Compete, or die.” At another instance, he tells Joy Lobo that his son had died after falling off the train on Sunday, and that he gave a lecture in the college on Monday. So, in a way, he is as clueless as the audience about the causality of his son’s death. And that is when the college suicides come home for him! Thus, he realises his folly, and this induces a change in him later on.

Taare Zameen Par is another masterpiece starring the perfectionist (Aamir Khan), but unlike 3 Idiots, it is tear-invoking for the most part.

The way you talked about "Male vulnerability" was so wholesome. My dad is my hero. Though Adam project is about Ryan Reynolds younger and older self but I know what you mean. Father and son relationships should be shown in a more humane way. Its one of the most special bond in the world.

So the son of Director didn't came out of nowhere. In the first scene with Virus he talks about how his own son failed the entrance exam 3 times.

Oh man, I sure am glad you guys decided to watch this movie and it makes me so happy that all of you liked it as much as I did. I watched this movie back in 2009 in the theatre with my dad. I was 17 at the time, and this was the first movie we watched after my mom's death. This movie really helped us open up to each other about our grief and connect more. I still remember seeing dad sobbing and sniffling in the theatre. :D It was so sweet. Ever since this movie, my dad has never pushed me to pursue something my heart isn't in, he has supported me through every ambition and diversion in career I've chosen to take, every step of the way. If my heart is in something, he'll support me without any hesitation, but if I'm not happy with it, he is the first to tell me that it was okay to let it go and he'll support whatever decision I make. This movie is truly an experience through and through! :)
