Community media forges ahead despite financial constraints

Still in the North West, community media has been playing an enormous role in unleashing talent in the country's broadcasting industry and amplifying youth voices. Despite operational challenges, different local media houses in the province say perseverance for the sake of serving locals is what keeps them in business. SABC News journalist Mpho Lepedi visited Mahikeng community radio station, which was crowned the best community radio station in the province by the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa, and The Mail local newspaper, which scooped the best newspaper of the year award in 2021 at the North West Media Awards.
