Roald Dahl's The BFG (1989) - Full Movie (FULLY RESTORED)

Here's something I've been working on for a while - my own restoration of that classic adaptation by Cosgrove Hall of Roald Dahl's The BFG, made to look like what could've been if it was released in cinemas.

This project stemmed from a conversation I had with Jack Williams on Google Hangouts. We both noticed that the colours, pitching and presentation of the film in general were a bit off - it reminded me of Disney's 1997 transfer of The Black Cauldron.

So I got to work, and I came out with what I think is a decent-ish restoration of the film. I hope you like it!

Fun fact: this was the only adaptation Dahl approved of his work while he was still alive—he vocally despised both The Witches and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

At the premier, Dahl and his family stood up and applauded. Brian Cosgrove, the director, was tremendously relieved.

I'll never forget first watching this on Christmas Day in 2006, up in my bedroom alone feeling depressed because my parent's were about to divorce and I could feel tension between them. Now, sixteen years later at 25 I'm incredibly happy with a loved one of my own. Watching this is bittersweet, beautiful and upsetting. I'm so glad to have it back again. Life is such a bizarre journey.

Hours and hours and hours of watching this on tape as a kid. So many years later and when I needed it, it still had the magic.

I can see why Dahl liked this one. It tidies up what needs tidying up while leaving everyone major untouched and charming as in the books.

The musical score on this movie is absolutely superb. Really heightens the atmosphere. These giants (even as an adult who has watched the film dozens of times) terrify me!

Nice touch at the end when BFG calls the people "human BEINGS", not "human BEANS". He was in the world surrounded by giants who just saw them as beans to eat and now experiences them as beings of their world.

I like this one a lot more than the new one. I'm not normally one of those people who insists old movies are better simply because they're "classic" but this is one of those instances where it just happens to be true regardless. The environments are a lot more memorable and distinct, the giants are not only scary but visually distinguishable, and I think overall the voice actors did a lot better here than in the 2016 film (with the exception of the BFG himself, who I felt was done justice in the new film).

I've no idea how this got recommended, but I'm glad it did. This is an amazing children's film and brought back a lot of early 90's memories.

I like this adaptation better. Captures the tone of the book. Making it feel whimsical, heartwarming, and dark all at the same time. The bad giants actually look like villains instead of the newest versions of them which they were giant toddlers.👏👍😎😁

A movie where the adults not only believe the children about the supernatural threat. But one were grown ups get off their bums and actually help neutralize the threat. That's a rarity in kid's films.
