Paul Breitner has said that the best team of the 1974 WC was neither Germany nor Clockwork Orange Holland, but Poland.

It was our greatest chance to win the World Cup and our the biggest "what if". What if it wasn't much of rain?

As often the case Muller the difference between two pretty well matched teams. Lethal striker and the battle hardened West Germany team wins again....

I was never a big fan of Sepp Maier, he was at times error-prone. But in this game he was absolutely majestic.

A very tense match. But - in contrast to all urban-myth followers on here - I daresay although it was a match on the highest level and although the Polish team were world class the German move to the final was a deserved one.
First of all: a draw would have been sufficient to win the group anyway (the German difference in goals was better, remember?); secondly, the Germans played quite well actually and Müller's goal was great (Hoeness even missed a penalty). Sepp Maier had a great day with lots of saves, agreed, but that's also part of being a great team.
Come on, my Polish friends: there was no conspiration on the part of the weather gods, and speculations on whether the Polish side would have beaten the Germans on a sunny day are rubbish. Noone will know that, they might have lost on a hot summer day as well.
What we DO know, though, is that the Germans won the final match against one of the very finest teams of the tournament, the Dutch. On a dry day and with perfect pitch conditions. And they had beaten both the Swedish and Yugoslav teams (who were also excellent and hadn't lost any match in round one).
So do stop this unsubstantiated constant nonsense about "the Germans only won because it rained". It is an urban myth.

Is it just me, or do the matches of the '74 world cup have more speed, than most matches of the' 94 world cup?

Poland was one of the best in 1974 and 1982. They beat every other team and probably could have beaten Germany if the great Sepp Maier was not there.

There were East Germany and West Germany, two different teams in World Cup 1974.
Please be clear.

Poland have consistently been one of the more underrated nations in international football despite the Eastern European nation being a perennial source of quality talent. With The Orly having finished 3rd in both the 1974 and 1982 World Cups and reaching as high as fifth place in the 1978 FIFA World Cup Standngs – it’s fair to say that Poland has a strong footballing pedigree. Here's some top talents produced by Poland during the golden era of Polish football in the 70's and 80's :  Zbigniew Boniek, Antoni Szymanowski, Kazimierz Deyna, Janusz Kupcewicz, Grzegorz Lato, Andrzej Szarmach, Władysław, Żmuda and many more others ....

(Johan Cruyff - 1974)
