Multidisciplinary artist Ozzie Juarez uses the realms of painting and sculpture to honor and revitalize ancient and recent cultural artifacts, languages and histories.
Just as graffiti can illuminate elements of cultural identity, Juarez studies the pre-Columbian MesoAmerican manuscripts known as the Mexica (Aztec) codices. The presence of the stunning blue color of Lapis Lazuli represents endlessness to the artist, and the mix of raw and painted textures is a nod to his graffiti roots.
Inspired by the techniques, ambitions and ephemeral qualities of unsanctioned public art, he incorporates excerpts of paintings he observes across the Los Angeles landscape into his own work.
