Desire is what triggers the change. That is not always a bad thing, in her case she wanted more than anything to marry her fiance but because he died her desire could not be fulfilled and she turned. Forever stuck with the pain and all consuming desire to be a dead mans bride. Same with the mother who lost her child, she turned but she was able to retain enough of herself to still try and protect the children she encountered from the violent monsters. Love how based on their desire and the strength of it it decided on how much of themselves they were able to keep.
