Gerry Cooney - Is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 1990 and challenged twice for world Heavyweight titles in 1982 and 1987 (for the WBC and lineal title in 1982 and 1987 and for the lineal title only in 1987.) Cooney compiled a professional record of 28 wins and 3 losses, with 24 knockouts. He is widely regarded as one of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history. He beat Ken Norton, S. T. He is ranked number 53 on The Ring's list of "100 Greatest Punchers of All Time". According to George Foreman, Gerry Cooney was one of the three hardest punchers he had faced in his career along with Ron Lyle and Cleveland Williams. Cooney is remembered most for his fights with Norton, Foreman and Larry Holmes. Devastating puncher!

I met Mr Cooney back in 2005 or so at a fund raiser for a co-worker who was battling cancer. I had the pleasure to have spent about 30 minutes with him talking about boxing. He's such a gentleman. Before we parted ways, I took a picture with him. He's a genuine good dude.

The guy fights almost exactly like Rocky Balboa/Marciano. Big George said he was one of the hardest punchers he ever fought. Despite the racial tensions caused by his fight with Larry Holmes, they are now lifelong friends and Holmes will not suffer an ill word said about Gerry Cooney in his presence. Respect.

When he lands to the head, his hand doesn't seem to lose momentum. The opponent's head just snaps away.

When I was growing up, people talked about Cooney as a punchline. The guy could fight! Brutal KO power, a beautiful left hook, amazing body punching for a heavyweight. He might have been the guy if he was around today.

I've seen that clip of him pummeling Norton in the head for years and years, it still amazes me Norton didn't die, and it still amazes me the ref didn't get in there sooner

Has to be one of the hardest punchers ever. You can really feel the weight in those shots.

man this guy didn't deserve that stupid "great white hope" label, he was just a damn good fighter that fought because he loved to fight! He was always in an entertaining fight win or lose.

I often wonder how far Cooney could have gone if he had been trained by Dundee or Gil Clancy (early in his career). Had he fought often, had good sparring, and had more experience and more rounds in before the Holmes fight. He should have fought Weaver first for his version of the title. He had undeniable power in his left hand. He should have jabbed more.

Tua and Cooney. Most frightening left hooks in history. Nightmares. Cooneys left hook was life changing. He was rearranging people’s insides

He was lefthanded but was fighting orthodox to have his dominant hand closer to his opponent and that's why his left hook was so dangerous.Norton must have come closer to God in his fight with Gerry cause i honestly believe he was lucky to survive that unnecessary beating.

Both Foreman and L Holmes said after their fight that GC was a hard puncher and much better boxers than they imagined. And had he not let them get into his head, well you know.
