In a new report from Insider Gaming it looks like Sony is gearing up to launch a newly revamped service that could actually compete and even leapfrog Microsoft's current game streaming setup. How will this actually fair though and is it what gamers want?

The amount I'm willing to pay for cloud gaming $0.00

I'm sure whilst these cloud solutions will improve, they're still fighting physics. I can't see Sony (or MS even) dropping datacenters within 100km of all of these gamers, and people having ubiquitious low latency internet access.

Never playing anything that is "streamed", do I care if I'm missing out on the "new thing" or if it's the "future"? Nope. Even if all new games from now on were streamed, there is plenty of content over the past 3 decades that I've never played before waiting to be discovered that would last a life time.

Our technology is not quite there yet for Cloud Gaming, but it will be a thing one day for sure, we wanting it or not. For Sony and Microsoft to be prepared when the time comes, is just a smart decision.

If they fix PS3 streaming, they've got my premium sub. Most of the stuff I would stream just isn't playable right now.

I think its obvious that no one wants streaming to replace current gaming. Its very obvious why these companies are pushing this, they can charge indefinitely for a streaming service. Just like movies, photoshop, microsoft, etc.

It does seem like a matter of when but I don't think it will be like the tech is now either. I feel these companies will eventually want platform agnostic ecosystems, which will allow you to experience the content you own in varying different ways. Especially as VR and AR evolve. I could see an evolution to Arcade's to start, where it's a major centre people can go to experience gaming/interactive entertainment. In ways which require far more power than a native box can deliver. Then eventually, they manage a version of these portals for the home where you get that full immersion like never before.

If and when consoles go all-digital that's when I will quit gaming. It's no way I will be forced to buy something that I don't own. physical forever

We’re coming full circle on those hotels that had a snes/64 controller attached to the tvs. Lol

This all sounds like marketing talk. They can make the fastest, most performant servers in existence and the latency will still be an issue because that's 100% dependent on the Internet/ ISP.

They must invent a server capable of predicting the future.

Well that's kind of a letdown. The power of the cloud is to give customers even less control.

Tbh probably the target that would use xcloud don’t need/care of 4K and the people that would care will see it as a complement and not as their main place to play

Been saying it for ages, this company is resilient.
They are savvy with What budgets they have.
You can see it across their subsidiaries.
Sony is the only major film production company that opted out the streaming game knowing its a flailing gambit.
And they do the same in music and gaming.

Are we sure this is streaming? Seems more like really fast network storage, and your console would still actually play the game. This is how video streaming works now, its just data sent to your and your device plays the video. Netflix and other services also allow for offline play, which the ps5 could do if they stop trying to actually have the game run remotely.

Cloud streaming will also eliminate any way of archiving and emulating the games in the future.

Cloud gaming will only be solved if we have an internet leap in latency similar to the switch from dial-up to broadband. It would only work if game response to input was instantaneous.

Hot take, hope to god I’m wrong:

Wasn’t Cronos the titan that ate his children? I foresee cloud gaming being the de facto method games are released on, alongside digital purchases. Sony will have gobbled up their own baby, physical media.

Im starting to think that the Q-lite aint remote play only. Im willing to bet its not.

This is the future without a doubt! In 5-10 years I'm expecting latency will be on par with playing a game locally. At that point physical consoles will go the way of VCRs/DVD players of the 90's and early 2000's.

So serious question: What is PlayStation's plan for the rest of this year and going forward? They blatantly held back multiple games and only showed one first-party game in that horrible Showcase they had earlier this year - and only have one first-party game coming out this year. They supposedly have a slim ver. of the PS5 coming out next year, they're supposedly releasing some games early next year by March, and they've reportedly put 60% of investment into idiotic GAAS - so my question is: when are they planning to announce all of this? They have to do something this year to give enough time for advertisement, so maybe they'll do something in the fall? Or they can be ballsy and wait until early next year? But that'll be too close to March? I'm genuinely confused about what their plan is. It's not like they have to keep downplaying themselves due to the Microsoft deal - they have to start releasing games. 🤔
