In response to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, various religious and political leaders have called for unity, prayer, and reflection. Trump, who was hit in the ear but survived, credited God for sparing his life. The attack, however, did result in the death of a bystander, Corey Comperatore, who shielded his family, and left two others critically injured.

Catholic Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh, shared that there is a need for Americans to "pray for each other" and condemned the divisive nature of current society, urging personal reflection and following Jesus' example to seek the best in each other.

Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills California called the incident a "warning shot from God" and urged Trump to deepen his faith. “Other Christian leaders, including Albert Mohler and Bishop W. Shawn McKnight, condemned the political violence and called for prayers for Trump and the nation. Mohler, specifically, said, “This kind of attack is an attack upon our entire political system and our commitment to ordered liberty. Let’s pray for our nation.”

Politicians like Nancy Pelosi and Marco Rubio expressed gratitude for Trump's safety, with Rubio and Franklin Graham attributing it to divine protection. “I thank God that former President Trump is safe,” said Pelosi. Rubio proclaimed that "God protected Donald Trump.”

Pastor Greg Laurie, as with Hibbs, hoped the incident would renew Trump's faith, similar to Ronald Reagan's experience after his own assassination attempt. “We often speak of someone ‘dodging a bullet,’ but for President Trump, this became reality. We thank God he was spared and pray for his complete recovery,” Laurie said. Pastor Robert Jeffries of First Baptist in Dallas said that he believes “God spared Donald Trump’s life for a purpose … for the purpose of calling our nation back to its Judeo-Christian foundation.”

Overall, the incident has highlighted the urgent need for unity, reduced inflammatory rhetoric, and a return to faith and compassion in the political and social spheres. The Vatican and other religious leaders stressed the importance of the common good and respecting life at all levels. Zubik went on to also say that "It’s the role of the Church, and certainly of our Holy Father and the rest of us, to be able to move the needle... by respecting life on all of its levels and respecting every single human person.”
