What you said about skin prep is absolutely key. I have enlarged pores, etc. and was using primers for years. It may not be necessary. Primer can also be tricky with working well under your makeup of choosing. In recent months I have focused on skin prep with no primer and have been enjoying the results. Definitely not trying to take away from this video at all! I still enjoyed it and may use a face primer again. We all have different skin and what works for one may not for another.
