Chinese programs have had incredible successes as well as incredible failures. The great famine and one child policy are some of the latter.

im just wondering when having no kids will be made illegal

Now we have 3 countries with birth rates below 0: South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. It's ironic that the richer a country is, the more expensive it is to have children

We complain about population being too high and then complain that its fixing itself

If for 36 years you train the people to drink only Coke, don't be surprised if for at least 10 years they refuse to drink Pepsi.

I remember reading that urbanization tends to lead to lower fertility rates.
A lot of major cities throughout history have always had their populations grow from rural migration

I love how they casually lost the equivalent of the entire population of my country and it barely made a dent. Big countries are interesting

From 1979 to 2021 that's 40 years there people have just one kid that's 2-3 generations that only had one kid. It will take that long to turn it around maybe even longer.

India recently put a man into space.
They didn’t use rockets, they just stood on top of each other’s shoulders and passed him up. 😊

An incredibly male centric society, and only let one family have one child. How did they not see this?
marshal_anon
And from what I hear, the 1 child policy is still so ingrained in the culture that it still weighs heavily on how much parents care for their children. Grandparents even more so. Girls are frowned upon, being from the mother's side is frowned upon. The opposite is true for boys and sons. They're gonna have a really tough time shaking those bad cultural attitudes out of the population.

The aftershocks of moa is still being felt.

In my childhood i always heard about how overpopulation is bad and scenes from india and china were shown of narrow slums, poor sanitation and poverty.
I feel like "the media" now decided to make people scared of underpopulation

There demographic crises are the things that keep me up a night.

I don't think the Chinese consider that a crown. More like a burden.

China's GDP: 17 Trillion USD
India's GDP: 4.8 Trillion USD
Having more people isn't a good thing.
