You can out it back the same way you took it off, which you did but following a bit different approach. The key is to twist it.

That brings back memories. The barbershop I went to as a young child had this toy. I remember solving it everytime I got a hair cut. 😊

If you pay attention you will notice that the ring is put back on exactly the reverse way of taking it off when he said you can't do it that way. When taking it off, the left hand turns away from you and the right hand turns towards you. When putting it on the left hand turns towards you and the right hand turns away.

I don't know about ancient, but that puzzle has been around for a while. Usually find them in tourists traps.
