DO THIS FOR SILLY LOUD LEVELS 😱

How I get my tracks louder than any other engineer ‼️

First, split the mix into grouped stems

You can do this in the mix itself, as long as you’re bussing things to groups

But, I prefer to bounce the track out 6-8 stems, then work in a clean session

This way I’m not tempted to alter the mix and I can focus purely on mastering

Find the loudest stem 🔊

Put a clipper on it ✂️

And push it to around -6 to -4

Duplicate the clipper across all the other stems

So they are all at the same level

And then the icing on the cake 🍰👇🏼

Put a limiter on your stereo output

This will join all of them together for a cohesive sound across the whole mix

I’m glad you added ‘and I don’t know why anyone would want to do this’ at the end.

Learning to properly clip and limit does wonders in saving head room 💡

There's a good reason I tend to find listening to pre 00's music for longer perdiods more pleasing.

The only downside to this I can see, is that any mix bus compression that you had during mixing now gets nulled because the compressor won’t be affected the same way with one bus at a time

Have you got any examples of tracks that you've mastered for well-known artists and have you ever gotten a grammy nomination for mixing or mastering one of them? Cheers

Can't wait till the fad is fidelity rather than squashed LOUDNESS!

I have the studio session files for “Make Believe” by Juice Wrld and the Engineer had done exactly this! I found a stem folder containing the stems separated as you have, so it must be a way to do individual clipping and then a cohesive master limiter.

I put all low end channels in a group, all instruments in a group, hard limit both groups. put them both in a group and limit that. everything else goes in a 4th group with limiting (except for vocals). all of that goes into the master which then gets limited. I learnt this from ahgee and the other dude on youtube. They learnt it from skrillex. No individual limiter works too hard. Giving a clean and loud sound. I aim for 5 lufs and get there comfortably with a nice sound.

People used this trick before volume knob was invented.

Once Baphometrix told "clip from the top, saturate from the bottom"

My problem is that I always find something to add/change in the arrangement. I could always go for another snare roll, pad layer, change up, beat switch, etc
