I think is dialectic is good example of the inevitability of going straight to 3 once you have moved away 1. As soon as thesis gives rise to antithesis then synthesis is implicit.

..Triangulation is the name given to the act of a political candidate presenting his or her ideology as being "above" and "between" the "left" and "right" sides (or "wings") of a traditional (e.g. UK or US) democratic "political spectrum". How does the description of the arising of a third from the breaking of the pizza universe in half differ from a dialectical process and description? Also, Jungians hold that threes betoken incompleteness. Fours betoken completeness, as exemplified by the elevation of Mary into sinless perfection in Catholicism. The female element of divinity.

Trichotomies, Very interesting. Two dimensions vs. three? I guess the father, son and holy ghost would be an example of a religious trichotomy. In

(cont) person who is both. You've know got a false trichotomy. Perhaps having three categories is useful in some contexts though, but often people have the misconception that all intersex people have the same biology, which isn't the case. There are many many different ways to deviate from binary sex norms.

As for trichotomies the first thing that comes to mind is "yes, no and maybe". Does that qualify?

I think false trichotomies are easy to make, often when noticing a false dichotomy. You realise the dichotomy is false, so you create a label for everything else that isn't in that dichotomy, and this can easily lead to a false trichotomy.
For instance, biological sex. You mentioned yourself the dichotomy of male and female. And this is a false dichotomy. But often, people who recognise this don't really know much about it, so they just imagine an "Other" or "Hermaphrodite", or (cont)
