Just a quick comparison between these two microphones. The Behringer fits into the DPA violin clip and is around the same dimensions.

Behringer CB 100 Condenser Gooseneck Microphone for Instrument Applications, Black $45

DPA 4099 Violin Mic 4099-DC-1-199-V4099 CORE Mic, Loud SPL with Clip for Violin $660

I would love to see a test regarding feedback issues, more than timbre, aspect that I think any of these mics on a stage with a band wouln't make much difference.

If you are looking to get the job done, go with the $ 45 Behringer. If your ego requires stroking, or you have can afford and money is not an issue, spend the $ 660.00. When the mix is done, no one is going to question what mic was used. Especially if what you are recording or the performance has any musical appeal. .

The mic placement was slightly different for these recordings. I don't know if you've experimented with mic placement, but a difference of an inch, especially near the bridge, is significant.

So. I am somewhat of a behringer fanboy. I really love much of their stuff. I've never used the CB100, but I have used the 4099s extensively from drums to strings to pianos to horns. They have been absolutely incredible!!

That said, after numerous listens, the CB100 just doesn't have the top end "air" that the 4099 seems to have in this video. Given our current technology, that shouldn't be hard to add, but it is still "missing" from the source material. There is also a refinement or sophistication that the 4099 seems to have compared to the almost brute reproduction that the CB100 does. Still, these are simply hyper magnified nit picking opinions that could very easily be biased by the price tag. However, I would absolutely take the CB100 and spend the balance on other stuff. If money was not an object I'd still think twice about all the other factors that may or may not really let the 4099 shine opposed to being slumped in with the cb100...

Just my thoughts. And Thank you for doing this no frills, raw comparison so we could really hear it! Great playing too!

Hmmm tough one. I feel like the DPA still captures a wider tonal range than the Behringer. I had to flip back and forth to try to get a better sense of it.

Firstly, really great playing!!
Secondly that Behringer mic looks to be wobbling around a lot compared to the DPA 😨 Cant be good for those lower frequencies. The upper midrange sounds a lot sweeter on the DPA, though.

I really want to buy the dpa 4099 microphone, but I have question marks in my mind!!!
Can I make my voice heard in an orchestra that plays hard music with drums, bass and electric guitar?
If you have experience in this matter, I would be happy if you could help me.

Thanks for this comparison!, for me the difference is above all a story of directivity on the capsules, the DPA is much less sensitive to the room than the Behringer and goes higher. The Behringer has more details in the low and low medium but which corresponds directly to the fact of having a capsule which would tend a little more towards the sub cardioid than the cardioid, is it perhaps the DPA which is a little tighter in its directivity than the Behringer? I don't know in any case live I would directly choose the DPA, in the studio in addition to a more imposing capsule I would surely choose the Behringer ... Thanks for your record !

I got inspired by your recent 12 hour stream to try out playing the violin for my streams as well c:

I was wondering what Microphone clip do you use? because the Behringer mic doesn't seem to include one

For $45 / £35 the Behringer was surprisingly good, not sure I would want to pay $660 for the other to be honest it is NOT 6x better

what did you use to attach the microphone to the violin?
