Medan Hokkien is spoken by nearly a million people, primarily in Medan, Indonesia. A variety of Min Chinese, it may be closest to the Penang Hokkien language of Malaysia, although more research is needed.

No wonder the Taiwanese could not understand. She is speaking a hokkien with lots of Malay words. Similar to Penang Peranakkan Hokkien. A Klang Hokkien speaker from Malaysia or Singapore would also be able to understand although they are considered a different dialects. I dont speak hokkien and am a Cantonese speaker from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia but grew up with listening to hokkien occasionally from neigbours. I can understand her message generally. By the way Medan and Penang were once a common Hokkien sprachbund amongst the Hokkien migrants with strong marital and trade ties between the two communities
