Keep in mind that removing the shrink rap off the filter when you get is shortens the storage life of the filter. If they say 20 year shelf life that is with shrink rap still on filter.

I can’t stress number 6 enough. We used to practice quickly putting masks on twice a year in the Army, including the seal. When you are stressed is not the time to figure it out.

Two points of attention. one: (you mentioned this very briefly) Even if you use a good quality gasmask with good filters, remember these filters don't last for hours. Depending on the filter and the contamination, operational time of filters can vary from 10-15 minutes to maybe 1 or 2 hours if the contamination is limited. This also goes for the n95 and p3 masks. They too get saturated with fine particles.
Two: In case of planning to use p3 / n95 masks to combat smoke from wild fires, remember to also get skiing or swimming glasses to keep the smoke from your eyes. In severe smoke your eyes will start to water wich will reduce your ability to see.

I worked for 3M and Honeywell's safety division. Primarily in the Respiratory Protection arena. We own CBRN full face respirators (large for me and medium for my girl) plus several CBRN cartridges for each purchased in stages to account for service life issues, plus one each tear gas cartridges. We also have several varieties and sizes of N95 disposable particulate respirators plus some KN95 masks. What I still need to add are industrial type half masks and full face respirators with stacked P100/multi-gas and vapor cartridges.Great video, thanks!

We lived near a small plastics plant a number of years ago. One day it caught fire (arson). The plume worked its way towards my work. We had to shut down the building and leave the area. Luckily it was blowing the opposite direction of our house. The smell was so caustic. So lucky that most people in and around the area were able to get out of the area. Those with asthma and COPD were hit the worst.
Take care, stay calm, and prep on 👍

I was part of the emergency response hazmat team for 15+ yrs. We trained regularly for potiential events and occasionally had to put that training into practice. I give you kudos for some good thorough information. Note: I still have my mask... yeah it's out of date...ugh!

I work in oil and gas, this stuff is common knowledge for us in the industry. Good representation of the information and knowledge! Thanks!

Having worked in Industrial Refrigeration with Ammonia (NH3) we trained regularly and that included mask fitting and inspection. Wrong filters will get you killed. With our annual training we had a fit test to see if you can function with a mask doing physical exercise. You will be surprised how fast you run out of air or get physically exhausted when wearing a mask or level A protective suit. Now do it in Fireman Turnouts and an air pack in a reduced visibility (smoke) environment.

Good information! Would add that if I remember right(might be wrong) once exposure to nbc materials you will want to change filters AND CLEAN the mask to remove any contaminants. Also exposure to rain, or high levels of moisture reduces the filter life.

Awesome video Kris!! As always chock full of invaluable information! Can we get a gas mask review next? Which ones do what and how well they do it, or what brands we should really look out for? Thanks again Kris for keeping the community ready!!

Right on. I didn't even know where to start with a gas mask. Thanks, Kris.

Garand Thumb did a video on this topic by testing the masks in CS gas. Something worth checking out.

Wow, how prescient is this. I just ordered our first mask and filters the other day. Was good to see that I successfully purchased the correct equipment. I'll refer back to this as soon as it arrives to make sure our follow through is good. Thank you so much for this valuable information!

Absolutely PRACTICE. When you first get one, put it on and fit it properly and Leave It On as long as you can. If you need to, build up to longer wear periods in a number of sessions. There is no such thing as too long.
On filters, don't bother with anything less than P100. The price is the same or little more and the protection is considerably better than with 95s.
A lot of the time I wear a half mask with P100s out and about, even at the bank! I get a question now and then and if it's the right kind of question I provide info on the subject.

We live off grid in a wild fire area. I have EVAC packs set up for each of the family. Each spring we refit the full face masks and check the context which includes a range of filters color coded for the event type, water, life straw, cord, lighter etc etc etc. Peace of mind. Did not matter what it cost when you consider the alternative.

I apologize to the group. I left my caps lock on in my last post out of laziness inferring an air of panic. I am sorry. Be reasonable when preparing and approach prepps with an air of design and logic.
Kris is once again presenting accurate and reasonable info.
