The first in my Avatar VFX series. I don't know any Tai Chi, but I really wanted to make a waterbending video, and I made this whole North Pole environment in Blender, so I put this short video together. Subscribe to see videos of the other elements!

Tutorial video for this effect here:

I still dont understand why some people thought air karate was a better replacement than the way bending was portrayed in the series and in this video

It's a good thing no one tried making a movie where they actually did that

If you want authentic looking bending choreography, remember:
Tai chi = Waterbending.
Hung Gar = Earthbending.
Northern Shaolin Kung Fu = Firebending.
Baguazhang = Airbending.

And honestly, whenever you work with the raw video, the actor doing those styles _really_ helps with the animation because the hand and feet positions in the kata that you use, pretty much tells you where you need to put the "dots" where the element will be most concentrated, and when finished, looks great even if you don't have the best VFX, it will look and feel authentic, and trust me that will go a LONG way. Any other style, even if you have great VFX will feel 'off', like uncanny valley off, the kind of thing where you can't quite put your finger on it, but it's just 'off'. So the fight choreography and using the correct martial art style in my opinion is far more important then having the best effect plugin in Vegas or Premiere.

There is definitely room for improvement, but this looks awesome. And from what I gathered you did this in a month or 2 with close to or zero knowledge. I tip my hat to you and eagerly await the fire bending one!

Better then a certain movie. How long were you working on modeling and animating?

Even with this level of animation, I would much rather watch this than the new series and the movie.

Oh my goodness someone who didn’t do that STUPID pouring water element I always see as if it makes sense for the bender to constantly lose water and the streams remain the same. Great job!

This is by far one of the best waterbending effects I've seen done with blender

Way better than what I can only imagine a live action made by a million dollar company could accomplish. Good thing such a thing never happened or else that would have been a mess, am I right?

What makes this better than the movie is that the water doesnt drip so much that you question how theres still water there in the first place. It’s controlled and precise, yet still loose and flowing. Great job my dude
