I'd say they lost most of there people because the rest of the Russian army and even air force could not support them they are airborne they don't have any heavy artillery or tanks or aa so when they land they took a time of fire and did not get the support they needed to capitalize on there infiltration

The VDV used so far have all been conscripts. 100, 000conscripts went to ground troops, while 45, 000 went to VDV.
