Climate change, pollution, frequent fires and environmental destruction as well as tourism are threatening Lake Baikal. Uncontrolled fishing with fine-mesh nets and increasing shipping on Lake Baikal are also causing serious problems. Mongolia is planning to build another dam on the Selenga River, which is considered the lake's main lifeline. This may lead to further disruption of the water balance in the lake and the river delta .
