I've tried contacting Lucas via the email that he provides on his channel, but it's evidently not a real address. If anyone happens to have contact with him, please send him my thoughts given the awful explosion in Beirut <3

Never thought the answer to "why do you drink so much coffee every morning??" would be: "ZEUS!⚡⚡"

I feel like Lucas, in his excitement to "deflate" your point, made the exact argument that deflates his counterpoint.

I had a good laugh when he started to enumerate causes outside of his control, to be the causes of his "free choice"

Stephen's gracious and straightforward recognition of his mistake was refreshing and something I wish we'd see more of in these debate videos and society in general.

It's actually very funny to see Lucas undermining his own free will by stating clearly the causes behind his decisions... Doesn't he see that is what determined his response to the coffee question?

This was a great response video man - really clear and genuine, arguments only and nothing personal - great job!

Free acts, even without deliberate consideration, involve cognitive processes that result in a reaction. These are generally in line with preferences. Preferences are a combination of innate and learned inferences. Inferences are accumulated over time and dynamically interact with each other. An innate reaction to intense heat like fire is to recoil without apparent choice. A learned reaction to hot porridge is blow on it and test it before taking a spoonful. In both events, the decision to do this is likely completed a few micro seconds before we are actually conscious of them. If so, then our conscious self is simply reviewing a post event (based on innate and learned triggers) set of re-actions to conceptual and perceptual stimuli. While consciousness can keep pace with these sub conscious processes to the point they seem synchronous, it is always behind the times in our actual decisions or actions.

At the start of this video, 3-4 minutes in, I thought Lucas was actually giving the case the libertarian free will doesn't exist... all those causes he listed for the coffee would make it impossible to say no most days.

A brilliant point that comfortably slips under the radar. - rationality rules rules!

Don't you think that Lucas is also mixing up "reasons" with "causes"? He certainly gives good reasons for why he accepted the cup of coffee. However, let's also consider that he has a heart condition and his doctor has told him not to consume caffeine. Now he has good reasons to both accept or reject the coffee. Which orifice does he pull his free will from now?

For what it's worth: I think Lucas had a very friendly vibe :)

This video really wrinkled my brain. Thanks for that. The few examples of freedom i couldn't find causation for comes in the form of art. Art and music although may have some causation but the freedom of expression or lack there of is determined by ones free will and the final artwork may have other factors influence it but the artist is the one who chooses every brush stroke, bar of music, and when unfinished project becomes completed.

its nice to see that people can be nice to each other for once

For many people, the thought of determinism is scary. I´ve come to think that the alternative would probably be worse. What characterizes us and our personality - is a pattern in decision making. Given the same or similar circumstances, we will always react in the same fashion. Those reactions can be very different for different people and are what make us unique.
If our wills were truly free - a sense of randomness enters the picture. I don't see a place for us to have a continuous character or even the development of character under that view.

"Man can do what he wills but he cannot will what he wills" — Schopenhauer
i.e. Actions/choices are determined by wants (will). Wants (will) are not chosen.
Therefore actions/choices are not determined by free will
