The conventional literary approach to Sufi poetry is to see the erotic elements as metaphor for religious / mystical meanings. However, one of the things that the study df homoerotics has taught us is that often, it can be the reverse. The use of religious metaohor or sacred meaning or allegory in general has often been a mask, of sorts, for codified erotic meanings and appeal when those erotics are considered morally impermissible.

I can think of no two civilizations where such a thing would flourish more than European civilization and Islamic civilization.

Sufism came from India but i don't know how it reached Central asia and persia

It would be very different to the Islam of Mohamed.
