Glædelig midsommer og velkommen til "Dæily June Tune" dag 23!
Kræn Jerup var en af den mest kendte spillemænd i Vendsyssel i midten og slutningen af 1800tallet. Hans søn lærte al musikken, men emigrerede til USA hvor han heldigvis blev ved med at spille og gav musikken videre til barnebarnet Dwight. I Vendsyssel var der ikke længere nogen til at spille musikken.

Via Anni Lehman på Tønder Festivalen fandt Mette og jeg i 2008 frem til Dwight på prærien i Iowa , USA. Det blev starten på et varmt venskab og gennem de sidste 12 år har vi turneret med Dwight i både USA og Danmark, haft en fest og spillet det gamle Vendsysselrepertoire. Og rundt om i Danmark er musikken igen blevet taget op og spredt blandt nysgerrige, herboende spillemænd.

Jeg stoppede i Bjergby hvor Dwights morfar, Chris Jerup voksede op og jeg fik lov at spille i den smukke gamle kirke. Her blev Chris konfirmeret i 1880'erne inden han i 1893 emigrerede til Iowa med kone og børn. Jeg synes det var på sin plads at fejre midsommeren med dette lille sæt af lokale festmelodier, som Dwight og hans morfar har passet så godt på i over 100 år, tusind tak for det!

Happy Midsummer and welcome to the "Dæily June Tune" day twenty-three!

Kræn Jerup was one of the best known fiddlers in Vendsyssel in the mid and late 19th century. His son learned all the music, but emigrated to the United States where he luckily kept playing and passed the music on to his grandson Dwight. In Vendsyssel there was no longer anyone to play the music.

Via Anni Lehman at the Tønder Festival, Mette and I found Dwight in Iowa, USA back in 2008. That became the start of a warm friendship and during the last 12 years we have toured with Dwight in both the USA and Denmark. We've had so many great times and played a lot of the old Vendsyssel repertoire. And around Denmark, the music has again started to spread among curious, Danish folk musicians.

I stopped in Bjergby where Dwight's grandfather, Chris Jerup grew up, and I was allowed to play in the beautiful old church. This is the room where Chris was confirmed in the 1880s before emigrating to Iowa in 1893 with his wife and children. I thought it was very suitable to celebrate midsummer with this little set of local tunes that Dwight and his grandfather have taken so well care of for over 100 years, thank you so much for that!

I continue my journey around the musical landscape of Denmark and will be sending small clips from where I am. Every day in June a new little video with a Danish fiddle tune. I have been fascinated and inspired by the many good colleagues around the world, who have made these kinds of projects. And at the moment when the activity of tours, school concerts, etc. is rather low, I thought: if not now, then when? And after I came up with a title for the project, I decided to give this experiment a try. And for that occasion I have talked to several good people who recommended me to create a separate music page for the project, so here it is!
