Banksy is one of the most famous artists in the world and has a public intrigue that’s increased exponentially over the years because of his anonymity and subversion. The artist has made a career out of creating anti-war, anti-capitalism, and anti-establishment messages. However, the great irony of Banksy’s work is that every institution he criticizes loves his art.

I like the cognitive dissonance at the end of this video, bemoaning how Instagram is commodifying everything and then asking for viewers to check out the creators' merch. It's the same dissonance that can both acknowledge that Banksy has made millions off his anticapitalist work, and yet also claim that he retains his anticapitalist authenticity. He could always devalue that work by making billions of prints, but he doesn't. He understands the market value of his work, and cashes in out of every show and residence. So to then claim that he doesn't have any capitalist motive is to ignore the way he participates in the monetization of his work.
