Piano Improvisation no 2 (GREECE) - Nikos Kyriazis

I explore the vast variety of musical scales used in Greek folk music, known as ‘dimotiko tragoudi’; where music, dance and poetry are all performed as an undivided piece. Here I’ve lowered the pitch of the piano in order to sound purposely out of tune, to remind the sound of the Greek urban instrument called ‘laterna’, which was a full moving orchestra inside a ‘wooden box’. The frequent use of grace notes in my playing is related to the technique of playing the ‘santur’; a hammered zither mainly found in the musical tradition of northern islands of Aegean. The meter is ⅞, found in many folk dances of Greece such as ‘kalamatianos’.
