My great grand parents sold their properties in Bethlehem and fled to El Salvador (or perhaps they just said "America" meaning U.S.A. to them as opposed to a Latin American third world country) at the turn of the 20th century. They faced meager conditions under the Ottoman rule back then.

Large Christian and Jewish communities existed throughout the Levant and North Africa. Sadly they have almost all gone.
