Yes, I read that story years ago, and it's all true. MJ was the first African American to play his music on MTV. MTV was slow to add more blacks to its station. In fact, MTV labeled his songs as POP and not soul. That is how he got labeled the King of POP.

I was only 6 years old but I remember. There was a great deal of controversy about it until Billie Jean premiered and shut everyone's mouth 😁 Not too long afterwards The beat It and Thriller videos Premiered and saved MTV the same way Michael had saved the music industry with his previous album, off the wall

It's hard to believe MTV was racist when rap made them what they are.

~ Anyone who has doubts about this should look up David Bowie gracefully slamming the network in an interview with former MT-VJ, Mark Goodman.

…A true ally from that point in his career. He stood up to this sort of racism and bigotry by calling it out in his debonair style.

People act as if these sort of things do not continue to happen. Stories like this are reported as “history” which, oftentimes undermines the current state of affairs.

I can tell you, as a burgeoning Pop-star, who went to University for Media Studies, and who grew up in The International Civil Rights Center and Museum (my Dad it’s first curator/executive director), this sort of bigotry and implicit bias—covert and overt discrimination—happens to me ALL OF THE TIME… Literally, daily.

The fact that I am considered an artistic savant—with prodigious talents, since childhood—yet, still have a challenge being heard, is obscene, absurd, and a gross injustice to the world. Particularly when I make dope music/art that uplifts rather denigrates (like so much of what is at the top of the charts). How many amazing artists are being kept from the people because of bigots?

It’s a sick, sad world. Keep going.
