Antonio Lauro, Suite Venezolana (Jorge Caballero, guitar)

The Venezuelan composer Antonio Lauro (1917 – 1986) is considered one of the most important composers in Latin America. As a guitarist, his contributions for the guitar were vast. One of his best compositions, the Suite Venezolana performed here, was written during political exile in 1952 along with his Guitar Sonata, together his most probing compositions from a structural and harmonic perspective. The Suite begins with a Registro (a kind of prelude), which is then followed by Danza Negra in ternary meter, Canción in 4/4, and ending with a Vals, where elements of the previous movement reappear. Throughout the Suite, the listener is treated to the exuberant elegance of Lauro’s writing, and one of the best representative works of the quality of music written for the guitar in the mid-20th century.
