Turn Wheel Weights into Lead Ingots.

Step by step on how I take cheap lead wheel weights and turn them into usable lead ingots that fit in my Lee melting pot for casting bullets. After skimming off the clips and dirt I flux the lead with a bean sized chunk of candle wax. It causes more of the impurities to float to the surface so I can skim them off. I also use cheap muffin tins from the 2nd hand store as a mold.

Thannks for the answer and the advice, I think I'll just buy pure lead and use what I have including the bird shot for 5 colt. I just got the muzzle loader and dont want to chance ruining it. I also am casting for cap & ball.

Now I know how to identify and separate zinc from lead. Most of my wheel weights are older than the hills and have been sitting for 19 years with about as much gunk on them.

Just called the local scrapyard and he will sell me used takeoff wheel weights for .30 cents a pound. I am going in the morning with several 5 gallon buckets to buy some for casting bullets. I also use scrap range lead that was originally bullets but that is harder to come by. You have to recover it when the shooting range is closed and the process is time consuming. This looks like another option that will be faster and more readily available. At .30 cents a pound it isn't free like the other but is still very cheap.

Good job but Just an advice Always wear a Mask FFA2P3 when you melt lead and wear Also protective glasses gloves and a protection suit that Is useful to protect you from lead particles.

Thank You for the spiel about lead. I see so many people casting inside or even pouring babbit inside their shop. BIG NO NO. Melting metals even just lead is a big safety concern in so many ways and you can never be too safe with your own health/loved ones and the well being of your property

So there are different compositions and hardnesses of lead? is there such thing as lead that is too hard or too soft to make bullets out of?

Don't buy those expensive molds. just use cheap muffin pans you can get from Walmart. want smaller ingots? Use the mini muffin pans.

Hey boss I messed up and bout a ww2 electronic casting pot for making ingots, it's too small! I'm out of propane for all my burners. I could use my lee pot or keep going 1 ingot every 10 minutes with my ww2 casting pot that only holds 1-1/2 pounds of lead.. 30 to 40 for a good one. 13.99 for a hot plate $$. My question.. how long did it take to melt completely??? since hot plates only reach 460 degrees! And what brand? Thank you

Some people use spring loaded center punches to make sure they remove the zinc ones.

Good idea for the Zn wheel weights ~ use them to forge new die cast cars out of. Lol
