Baptized into Christ: Union with Christ with Sinclair Ferguson

Baptism is much more than being washed with water; it is a naming ceremony. When we are baptized into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we are placed into the family of God. In this message, Sinclair Ferguson relates baptism to our union with Jesus Christ, discussing how this sacrament signifies our death to sin and our participation in His resurrection life.

Romans 6:3-5 in the Sacrament of baptism we are baptised into the death, burial and resurrection and thus united with Christ. Gal 3:27 we put on Christ in baptism.

Wow. That was beautiful. As we got to verse 2, I thought "No! That would be horrible! Go back to the person I was before salvation?!!!!?" The next thought immediately came "That is a life I NEVER wish to return to! How empty. How lacking of all hope. How confused. How desperate." <--- But .... before I was saved, I wouldn't have said my life was empty, lacking hope, confused OR desperate. I would have been quite taken aback at that suggestion. The reason is, I didn't know what "being in Christ" was and what it meant and how it would change me, until after He saved me! (It was not my idea, by the way, I was a staunch atheist, who really, actually hated God -- as I understood Him from bad teaching in the churches our family was sucked into in the States.) Well, I got mad, many years later, again, about the fact that I knew I'd been lied to about God - but I didn't really know about what. Which was a lie? Which was the truth? So I just decided to read the Bible for myself, cover to cover (like a novel) to find out what this God said about himself, instead of listening to every Joyce, Beth and Kenneth! I was really sick and tired of everyone's "opinion". So, I read the Bible. When I was done I thought "Wow, that wasn't anything like ANYONE ever told me in all the thousands of services my family took me to!" I was floored. Yet, I still couldn't articulate it, so I thought, "well, I'll read it again, slower".
It was during the second read that God broke into my little world and I suddenly knew there really WAS a God and the next thing I suddenly knew was how much I had sinned (remember I'd read the Bible once, cover to cover), and then I realized that Christ, the spotless Lamb of God, the Son of the Father, the only totally innocent man who ever walked the earth, died that horrible death FOR ME!
That was too much. I was devastated. And little did I know even what had happened. But other family members soon became concerned as to what had happened and they asked "Who got to you?" as in "who brainwashed you into this Christian thing?".
Well, my story has to be the truth. God did. It's ALL on Him. He did it.
Being housebound, getting baptized was a bit of a job, but sweet people from a Bible Preaching local church near me, worked hard to haul me there so I could get baptized and actually publicly "admit" that I, the former God-hater, had become a Christian.
And I will never run out of amazement and joy and thankfulness and gratitude for what He did, despite my wretched, sinful little heart and mind. There is no reason BUT because He chose to. I certainly earned hell several times over. And it has changed me so much, that before Paul even said "God forbid!" I was actually sitting here having a visceral reaction to it. I really appreciated how Sinclair Ferguson explained what that is.
Thank you so much!

In fact, every believer in the NT was baptized into the name of Jesus, which must be therefore the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is a CORE Doctrine of the Holy Scriptures. Romans 6:1-6. Every christian blessing and experience begins in Baptism. Eph. 4:4, Gal. 3:26-29.

Which baptism is a part of the salvation process, based on what the Bible says?
What did Peter say below?

Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
Act 11:17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water when they read the word "baptize" in the text. Based on the above, what is the one baptism of our faith found in the passage below? How many times is the word "Spirit" found in the passage, and how many times is the word "water" found in the passage?

Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

“baptize” KJV

Mat_3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Mar_1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Luk_3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

Joh_1:26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

Joh_1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

1Co_1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
