Roadrunner helps find rattlesnake in yard.

I'm not a "YouTuber" trying to make "content". I just happened to film this surprise experience one day. If I had it to do over again, I would have left them alone and filmed on until they fought or whatever. At the time, we were fond of the often visiting roadrunner and killed rattlers in the yard. Now, I very rarely kill rattlers and I dislike roadrunners...they eat lizards and other birds eggs. Funny how hindsight works.

Despite all the cartoon references, notice that as the man gets closer, the bird steps out of the shade into the sun dips his long tail for attention, and uses his shadow to point right at the snake's head.

I live in southwest New Mexico and yes these roadrunners are vicious little killers. I've seen them get a snake like this. Whip back and forth very fast and hard, then eat it. Awesome little predator, very beautiful bird. Good thing they are small, or we would be loving a Jurrasic Park movie.

I'm so impressed that folks actually interact with road-runners. I saw them occasionally in my travels as a road tech in Missouri and Arkansas. They seem, somehow, ancient, sort of like pileated woodpeckers which are also spectacular, at least to me. Good to see!

Those critters are smart. I watched one run along side boys playing football in a grassy field like it was a referee. The roadrunner was waiting for the boys to scare up grasshoppers so it could grab them.

I know of a few people who live in rural areas who feed roadrunners so they hang around as a repellent. Smaller rattlers are a food source for roadrunners.

Awesome Video! That road runner is one bad ass bird!! He was sizing up the rattlesnake, not sure if it would have attached it or not! If I had to guess I think the roadrunner probably would have… Now that would be really cool to watch…
