Math Everywhere: Unraveling natural and social wonders through mathematical insight

Located in Tokyo, Japan, researchers at the Meiji Institute for Advanced Study of Mathematical Sciences (MIMS) are pursuing mathematical understandings of a vast range of natural and social phenomena through modeling and scientific experimentation. Founded in 2007, MIMS has since established itself as an international institute for promoting cross border research in the mathematical sciences. It also functions as a hub for connecting researchers with partners in other laboratories as well as in industry. It has been recognized by the Japanese Government as one of four Research Centers in the Mathematical Sciences ---and the only one in Tokyo--- since 2014. Researchers annually come to MIMS from all over the world in order to study a wide range of topics. From research in theoretical biology and applied analysis, to “origami engineering” and the mathematical modeling of chemical systems, interdisciplinary studies abound at MIMS. With the mathematical sciences forming the foundation of the research at MIMS, faculty and graduate students approach their research from multiple viewpoints, utilizing theoretical techniques, simulation, and scientific experimentation.
