I appreciate your indepth analysis of movies. And I also appreciate that you fairly review movies with gay themes - and don't automatically give them favorable ratings.

OMG I agree with nearly everything you've said and had the same eye rolls while watching this movie. I came into this with such high expectations and it fell flat, but yes to Joan being a superstar light in this

I wouldn't call it a "remake"...but "loosely adapted" would be a more appropriate term. AngLee's version was between The gay couple, the Chinese Parents and WeiWei. This version is with two gay couples, the Korean Mom, GrandMa and the Korean Wedding. Two totally different cultures and atmosphere.

I was actually surprised how much I liked it! I thought it was going to be cheesy and stupid and I ended up tearing TF up!

I almost always find myself in full agreement with you two, but I actually loved this film. I thought the storytelling was wonderful, and I found myself incredibly moved by it. But great review, as always!

Personally, I had no intention on watching this film because the original has a stronghold on my childhood. It didn't need to be remade. And hearing that y'all didn't like it further proves that it didn't need to be remade. This is a prime example of "just because you can doesn't mean you should."

On another note, can y'all review Black Bag and Freaky Tales?

I watched the wedding banquet last night in theaters and came out a bit confused and disappointed. Perhaps I was looking forward to a fresh take on the original film, which I loved, but clearly it wasn't a good idea to compare both. It was sweet - yes. It touched on queer Asian experience - yes. Good performances - yes, particulary by lily gladstone and kellie marie tran and of course my forever queen joan chen. movie was too convoluted and messy to follow and hard to suspend disbelief. There was a lost opportunity for Bowen and Lily's characters to be more developed, when the movie spent that time forcing us to follow these tangled plotlines that are hardly believable. For instance - that scene where Bowen and Kellie are drinking is repeated twice - we get it. They could have leveraged these great actors more, Joan, Youn Yuh-jung, etc. At that point, the actual wedding banquet just felt superfluous. Also you CANNOT convince me that Bowen's character went from barley being able to commit to CHILDREN in one year. Wild.

Someone needs to make an AI that can lip read what Joseph is saying when he bleeps stuff out.

This sounds like a hard pass for me. I am biased because I love the original Ang Lee film which had so much respect and care for all the characters.

The original film is ok but it is pretty low budget and roughgoing at times. I dont see the point of remaking it. If you do, why keep the annoying plot point that a gay man sleeps with a woman and with the help of his magical gay sperm helps conceive a child? This is the story we need in 2025????

I know remakes aren't inherently a bad thing but not this. The original is one of those movies I randomly came across on cable fairly young and grew up watching solo periodically. It became like a warm hug. I guess I'll try this to be fair.

I'm definitely going to look up the original!

Nothing will ever top The Birdcage as a gay Rom Com. All time fave comedy.

I’m glad your honest and not giving this a good review just because it’s a queer movie. Love the 1993 movie. We will see if I like this one.

This made me wonder what you two would think about "Mid-Century Modern." I watched five minutes. Maybe it will improve with time?
