My great uncle was a navigator on a Lancaster during the dam busters raids. I remember how nice, gentle and calm he was but clearly made of nails on the inside. I remember he always said to me that he faced death but that until that happened he would do his duty.

Most enlightening. Just makes one realise how tough these folks had to be to operate this thing - unbelievable and also most saddening.

without a doubt the pre-eminent bomber of WWII bar none. The only bomber to be able to deliver 2 x 'Tall Boy' bombs or 1 x 'Grand Slam' earthquake bomb. It carried 2 1/2 times what a B-17 or B-24 could deliver. The nearest to this was the B-29 which didn't see action in Europe or Africa.
This was the standby bomber for the two Atom Bombs in WWII as the B-29s were struggling to lift them in late 1944 let alone reliably launch them. By which time the even better Avro Lincoln (or Lancaster Mk IV / V) was being built. In the end they hand built the 'Silverplate' B-29s by modifying the bomb bay (to the same 33 feet as the Lancaster), adding extra fuel tanks and using the Lancaster's bomb retainer and launch equipment.

What those Bomber Command aircrews did was just beyond belief night after night. Truly the greatest of the Greatest Generation. God bless them all.
Per Ardua Ad Astra.

Love all the aviation programmes, especially the one where you learn how to be a WW2 fighter pilot featuring the fantastic Anna Walker!

Is it the PH474? That one always comes to The Netherlands on may 4th and does a flyover over several cities, including the one I live in :) It’s such a sight to behold when that beast flies over pretty much as low as it safely can… I always imagine what it would have been like back in the day during ww2 when a whole squadron of those planes would fly over ready to bomb a target… must have been scary as hell…

I bet Guy would have been a pilot if he was alive during the war. he's got the guts, and commitment. that's what it takes

"... is a lot smaller than you would think". I had this same impression when I saw the bomb bay of B52. The plane itself was absolutely humongous, but the the space for the bombs was quite small actually.
