UltraBee Pollen Substitute? Yes or No? (Um... Yes!)

I get a lot of comments whenever I post a video about feeding bees pollen substitute. This is why I continue to do it. This is not an AD. I just like the Mann Lake UltraBee and the bees seem to like it, too. Obviously, local natural pollen is the best thing for bees, but I don't see any harm in offering them a supplement before the real pollen arrives. What do you think?

i dunno.. something tells me that keeping 90%+ hives coming out of winter means you are doing something right.

Any comment that starts with "it's stupid.." or "that's BS.." should be ignored as the commentor clearly doesn't have any constructive advice to offer.

They're your bees under your care; do what you feel is right!

Jim, Dave from Barnyard Bees has been showing us open feeding of pollen sub for awhile now. Just like you said, when the real stuff starts to come in, the bees go bye bye and completely ignore the pollen sub. 👍

Here in Montana we had a freak warm spell in the 60's, and the bees were buzzin', but there's no real pollen to be had. I put out a dish of ultra bee, and they went bonkers! Glad I had some on hand for 'em!

Let the bees decide what they want, they have the option to refuse it if they don’t like it or it doesn’t meet their needs. The bees always know best.

Love the footage of the bees flying around in their yellow parachute pants 🐝

Your bees are healthy and happy. And given your success, you keep on keep on doing what you're doing! Love your videos! Lots of love from Texas!

I have 6 hives and I had pollen out all winter. All my hives survived. The bees emptied the box 4 times we had a very mild winter here in the UK. Without feeding I'm sure I would have lost hives.

Bees aren't like humans. They will NOT go after substitute simply because they love the stuff. As hundreds of posters have shown, when natural pollen is available they will fly passed the substitute straight to the natural.
You're doing the right thing James, your track record speaks for itself and your care for your bees stands out.
Good onya mate, keep doing what you're doing, we love it!!

🐝🐝🐝🐝 that was an amazing video of them all over that pollen! You keep doing you because you know what works for you and your bees are clearly thriving!

Jim, I totally agree with you! I learned that they won’t take it if the real pollen is available. I p
ut some out in December and my bees were flying. I watched the feeder and never any action. Dan Ski told me they were getting the real thing, I didn’t think real pollen was available here in December but i started watching the hive and sure enough they were packing it in. I think because of the mild winter we were having was why real pollen was available.

Thanks for the video!

Great video, great response. "The bees know what to do." I do love the passion beekeepers have for their bees - but it would be nice if they listened to the bees. If the bees want something - it's up to the beekeeper to find out what it is and provide it. When they respond like that, just click it off the to do list and start sleuthing for what the next need will be. You really do need to stay ahead of them.

Haters gonna hate. Suns out Bees out. Boosting that brood with pollen substitute. Right on, man!

You are doing the right thing. We do the same thing for our Bees, if they need food we give them food. It's been a warm winter and they are coming out sooner, nothing in nature yet so lets make sure they don't starve. I've never heard of folks refusing to feed bees in late winter, that's when they are most likely to starve. Keep up the good work, looking forward to more of your barn build and bees.

Ha love it. Clearly those commenters don't watch Barnyard Bees. He goes into great detail exactly what you were saying. He shows over and over again that when the natural stuff is out the feeders (both sugar and pollen) are completely ignored. Offer the bees all you can and they will do what they know is best for them. If they don't want/need it they wont take it.

Love this channel!

Ultra bee is an INNOVATION. my bees also start to forge it. The weather is so strange due to climate change and the beekeepers have to be one step ahead. Why not give them a helping hand!?

Bees begin brood production in January here. No downside to giving them what they need if and when they need it.

You keep doing what works for you! I am always open to constructive criticism, but to many force their opinions down your throat. I am currently feeding winter patties and will soon switch over to regular patties. Last year my bees didn't go for the dry pollen substitute. They do like the premade patties. Keep up the great work saving the bees!
