You are the man, this is the truth, we need logic.

Well said. Diving can be fun but it has several risks. I'm glad someone finally said it on YouTube

I am constantly speechless at the behavior of many people on the internet: antisocial media.

When it comes to driving, it’s clear to everyone that you buckle up for safety, have a driver’s license, and should know the traffic rules. But when it comes to scuba diving, this sense of responsibility seems to vanish. However, even with driving, it took many years, even decades, for such measures to gain broad acceptance among the general public.

I think it will take more years and people like you to promote acceptance. The path is rocky. Thousand thanks and hats off to your commitment!

Spot on, Achim! As we all need to be aware of, diving is a sport you can potentially/easily kill yourself. There are certain topics you need to have down pat. If someone is not willing or capable to learn them, they should not be diving. And diving (and the physics behind it) is not overly complicated.

You are the instructor I would like to have for my next courses. When I did my OW course nobody told me anything about gas planning and I was the only student of my instructor....

I couldn’t agree more. Scuba training is no place for “gentle parenting.” Even the basic Open Water students need to be taught the importance of gas planning, and the consequences of running low/out of air. Even with a dive buddy, you could both run out before surfacing, especially if you are 40M deep.

Absolutely agree.. especially as long as there are instructors that puropsely leave the room during students taking Nitrox test so you can give the correct answers to the other students that obviously didn't understand anything and still don't even know how to use the tables ....

Don't think you need to pay any attention to those who are offended.
You have a fairly blunt, straight talking 'this is how I see it' manner - many people, myself included, prefer this - I want to know if I'm doing something wrong, I don't need fluffy pleasantries.
I would imagine that the vast majority of your subscribers appreciate your manner, and those who are offended aren't likely to subscribe, they'll just post a whining comment and move on - so my feedback to you is stop wasting your time worrying about them!

This is why when I started in diving in 2014 I was happy to be taught those old-fashioned dive tables. They give you a good feel for the numbers that you can store away and use for a common sense check on what the computer is giving you.

Absolutely agree. If I was a diveinstructor, I would feel the need to teach my students that numbers, the risks and the fundamentals of decotheory from the get-go.

I really appreciate your honesty and love the content you share. I’m a new diver (just 12 dives so far) and fell in love with it two months ago. Cave diving and technical diving are what initially fascinated me, and I’ve been into learning more about diving every day.

Something I’ve noticed, though, is that dive centers and shops seem (at least from my limited experience) to take a pretty relaxed approach to safety measures and protocols. For example, last weekend, I did an 18m dive for 45 minutes, and I already felt like a proper dive plan would’ve been helpful. Instead, the only instruction I got was to signal my buddy when I reached 70 bars (this center is SSI, I took my course with PADI and the instructors didn't even bother to get into the details of decompression theory).

Everything feels so rushed, and the people I’ve been diving with seem really experienced, which probably explains why they don’t feel the need to do buddy checks for what they consider “easy dives.” It feels awkward as a beginner, because I want to do things right but I don’t feel confident enough to bring this up with them yet, but I’d really love to dive in an environment where even the basics, no matter how “easy” or routine are taken seriously. Safety matters so much, especially as I’m just starting out, and I want to build good habits early on.

I often mention to new divers that the purpose of writing a dive log is to get an intuitive feeling for the numbers so that they can double check what the computer throws out and use experience to validate it. If they want to start getting closer to tech diving they can use the same concept by wearing two computers with different gradient factors and seeing the numbers change live during the dive and get a feeling for how depth and time effects ndl. Then after tech training they can do the same with dive plans, comparing the numbers from the planner and then afterward compare it to reality.

lmao people are so sensitive. don't worry, achim! i've been a long time supporter of yours. there are just people out there who are too sensitive and there's nothing you're doing wrong.

Achim, maybe it is sometimes the wrong audience. Some people run on hot air, so they go forever. Keep it up, and no excuses!

Amazing video. Some individuals seen to want to skip a formal course and intend to watch YouTube videos to become a scuba diver. What's worse is that some OWD LOOKS AT TECH VIDEOS THINKING THAT THEY CAN BECOME TECH DIVERS.

I wish more instructors thought/taught this way.
It doesn’t take long to do a proper gas plan, and mere seconds after the dive to review it in hindsight:
Was my gas usage spot on as proposed; if I used less or more than I figured, WHY?!

Congratulations! Another fun and entertaining video! Any tips on squidding from a boat? How do you decide where to fish?
