I think Sheldon meant Fort McHenry which is referenced in the Star-Spangled Banner, “That our flag was still there.” The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key (an ancestor of Francis Scott Fitzgerald who wrote “The Great Gatsby”) when he observed British naval forces bombarding Fort McHenry near Baltimore burning the War of 1812. At daybreak, a large American flag was still flying over Fort McHenry showing that the Fort had neither surrendered nor been captured by British forces. Fort Sumter, in the harbour of Charleston, South Carolina, was the site of the first shots of the American Civil War when secessionist Confederate forces bombarded the federal garrison there and forced its surrender.
