A tribute to the outstanding bass-baritone RICHARD COWAN. May he rest in peace and his legacy endure throughout the ages.

I created this production in 1998 in Costa Mesa for Opera Pacific. It then went on to both Dayton (?) & Detroit, presented by he extraordinary Doctor David diChiera of M.O.T. fame. Stephen was the first Don, with Renée Fleming as Elvira, Suzanne Patterson as Anna, Kevin Short was both the Commendatore & Masetto and Bruce Ford as Ottavio. I don't recall the name of the excellent Leporello. I believe that this was filmed at MOT in Detroit, and recall that the cast only included Suzanne Patterson from the original casting. Here the Elvira was Marianna Christos who was fighting a vocal infection, which she some what overcame by the time we opened, clearly this was filmed at the dress rehearsal. The conductor was Klaus Donath and I created the production as a stage director, set & costume designer.

One of my later two Don Giovanni productions which i created for Domingo in Washington National Opera has photographs & reviews on my web site. www.johnpascoe.com with Erwin Schrott and then later Ildar Abdrazakov as the Don.

Richard Cowan was an excellent performer and charming colleague, the combination of his beauty of tone being matched by his exciting physical stage presence made for a powerful operatic experience. He is much missed
