For instrumentalists and singers: A very detailed look at the first 8 bars of the popular standard. Discussion includes a very melodic and "ears" approach, modes to use, chord tones to aim for, bebop lines and how to create them, and rhythmic placement of lines to add an element of surprise to your solo.

This website doesn’t just give new insights into theory, it teaches how to think about making music. It’s just the best

Thank you. I was trying to learn this song to sing and play just today. Very helpful.

Sang this song at my Dads funeral. It was his favourite song because his brother used to play it in all the east end pubs back in the 1940's. Great song and you play and teach beautifully. It was the key changes that they loved.

“If I can’t tell what the chords are from listening to your solo you are not doing your job”
@aimee nolte
Probably the best advice ever. It will be my personal mantra from now on.
Thank you.

"the third is strong " you say it with such conviction, it really makes me believe that it's one of the greatest truths of the universe

That. That was amazing. I understand more from that break down than from two months of applied work at uni. Thank you.

A good friend of mine, a former school music teacher and amazing jazz musician, taught me to play notes from the chord ahead so it sounds like you know what you're doing. It works. Like you do here. Love this lesson, Aimee!

For me, this is easily THE most helpful video I've come across for my improvisation struggles. Thank you!

Holy crap, I just stumbled across this lesson. I'm a guitar player and it helped immensely! I'll probably watch it another 2 or 3 times over the next two weeks as a refresher. Great job!

One of the best ways to teach, is to show distinctions. That's what I love about this video! Very informative. Thank you!

Aimee, from one teacher to another, you are really wonderful. I sincerely appreciate the different approaches and levels (beginner to advanced) that you expand on. I enjoyed applying these concepts at a solo restaurant gig I played last night. This will also help me when teaching improv to my EXTREMELY cautious high school jazz band members at my school in Guangzhou, China. Thanks for sharing your gift!

Added to the tutorial,  there's the music being created right under our eyes and ears. Great thanks!
