For off-roading with large groups of people, mostly with no interest in getting a ham license, we went with GMRS because of the FRS compatibility and simplicity.

After watching this video, I’ll be getting my GMRS license. Like you said “ why limit yourself”. Especially in a emergency situation. it’s good to have options.

I am a General and a GMRS operator/repeater owner. My primary interest in two-way radio is for emergency communications. Having a good radio service that all of my non-ham family can use is a big benefit. I can be the human link between Ham and GMRS. I am encouraging my circle of family and friends to get their ham license as well as GMRS license, but many people are scared of the test.

we have a GMRS repeater in my area, that covers literally 1/4 of the state of PA. then when we have them thermal ducting events. nothern Virgina to Southern NY gets in. i'm 40 miles from the repeater, and the HT on low pwr, if i'm on a hill works great

Great job explaining the differences, I'm a 27MHz (CB Radio) operator from the late 70's in Australia, getting back into the radio world. I think its also worth mentioning that GMRS has 8 Repeater Channels along with the 22 channels (you mentioned at the end of your video). I'm sure you'll add this and the differences into the next more detailed GMRS video. Its also worth mentioning that most lower-end GMRS Radios, especially those with fixed antennas, do not support transmitting on Repeaters.

I live in western Canada, we do have GMRS but is limited to about 2 to 5 watts using small non removable antenna walkie talkies which does limit its usefulness over here I would hope my country allows more choices of higher power mobile, base, handheld units with external antenna and repeater capabilities in the future.

I have a gmrs license and several radios including a 20 watt mobile unit. Gmrs works very well for me. I got my CB license back in 1975 but I like gmrs better due to the much higher power I can legally use.

More GMRS!
I'm loving my Wouxun 805g & KG1000g! The KG1K is 50w.
I really think we should all be good with anyone in any part of radio.

Like you, I believe in a wide range of communication options: CB, GMRS, MURS and Amateur. I have radios in all services.

This channel is golden Jason! Insightful and always filled with great information. I still have a lot of catching up to do, both in watching your videos and filling in a lot of HAM data that I lack, even with my license. I'll be tuning in when I can, both online and on air. Interesting that this topic came up as I actually do a lot of listening to 462.55, it seems to be a busy channel. As much as I would have liked to focus more in depth than I have since my recent test, I've had to direct a lot of focus on computer and phone issues. Ironically, during my HAM exam, my computer screen started to flicker, never did it before, it was actually a bit embarrassing, within a couple days it was dead; glad I got that test over with when I did! My phone is old and slowly dying so I need a new one. Together they've forced me to spread my attention out to many areas, but I can tackle them all and be in a better position than ever soon. Nice to be able to show up to your channel and get some good data. I'll look into a GMRS license once the fee drops in half, it'll seem like it's on sale! Ha! Have a good night!

Biggest thing for GMRS for me is being able to communicate with my family with fairly simple radios. Good video!

Great info. Thanks. Question...you say FCC assigns you a call sign for the GMRS license. Do you announce your call sign in the same manner as when operating with a Ham license? This could be awkward if the main use is, say, family outings.

great content as usual...simply I got my ham radio license outside last year in a mask when first able...but as for my wife and kids not right now so doing GMRS on the family farm is perfect for them

If all you need is to talk with a group of known people traveling together (with varied skills (and passions) on comms) - GMRS sounds like a winner! However, if that same group of adventures get lost or stuck - HAM sounds like the best way to reach people outside your small group. Perhaps the ideal setup for a group might be to use GMRS, with one person having both HAM and GMRS capability... Your thoughts?

This is the video I want to send to family regarding why they at least need to get their Tech. license. I don't want them to limit themselves to just GMRS, MURS, or CB. As you mentioned, the more options, the better. But, at the same time, I cannot force them to do so. So, I very likely I'll get the GMRS license so they can utilize CB as backup.

I have a CB Radio in my truck, just applied for GMRS License, still studying for Technicians License. I'm going for it, taking a little time.

Last year I've got Ham Radio License, then this year I upgraded to General. After I got GMRS license just to cover more frequencies and to communicate with family members and friends that doesn't need to get a exam.
