having a baby in order to study sleep deprivation is real commitment to the research.

i think the thing you're supposed to do is enlist the help of your village/tribe to help in raising the baby since it's a shift activity which cannot reasonably done by just one or two people. but we don't really do that anymore cause we're "civilized" so we just suffer now :)

We need to implement work place nap time

Sleep deprivation sucks but on the other hand, those newborn cuddles are the absolute best. Enjoy it and congratulations!

As someone with ME/CFS, I always appreciate your videos, especially the ones about sleep and rest.

"It can make people feel bad."
Can confirm, last month my manic brain didn't let me sleep for 3 weeks straight. I was hearing music coming out of my air conditioner by day 7... by day ten I heard my dead grandparents having conversations I couldn't discern coming from the kitchen, at two weeks I checked into a hospital, the meds they gave me made my insomnia worse, and the facility was run like a prison.
I lied to the staff and told them I was doing better just so they would let me out. Went off all meds, slept like a baby.

Congratulations. Welcome to the life. My second is now in its terrible 2s and it's really terrible. Even with all the long nights and tantrums, I wouldn't change parenthood for anything in the world. Seeing them grow is just the best.

As a new parent as well I think I've found myself doing these on accident as well! Although my wife and I do one thing that I don't hear a lot of parents do which is sleep in shifts. This was partly so we could get a good, consistent, unbroken 5hrs+ a night but mostly because our son refuses to sleep on his back so we constantly monitor him while he sleeps. We've found that the consistent sleep, while potentially shorter, had a greater impact than total number of hours. This is totally anecdotal and I haven't researched anything, but like you said, I'll take the placebo!

2:00 I also love my caveats. My advisor hated it so much. And that was just as a theorist.

6:10 intermediate fasting also increases hair loss so yeah, maybe don't stick to it for longer than you have to

Good luck. Our second is 6 months now and we’ve been granted 2 kids that sleep very well! Hope yours will as well.

I found the hardest part of sleeping with a baby was after they finally fall asleep I would be so keyed up from the crying and soothing and carrying that I couldn’t relax enough to fall asleep. And then I would get stressed out from knowing I had so little time to rest and I was “wasting” it.

Hmmm. On napping and timed eating, from what I've seen over the years it seems there's two types for each; one that benefits and one that doesn't. I'm a no napper and I do better grazing all day and having a high fiber, protein & fat snack right before bed. I wonder if this is true across the board. It'd make sense as it's difficult to graze and fit in a nap. Glad to see research is finally being done on what we can do realistically to improve our sleep health.

I go to bed and lay down for at least a couple hours every late afternoon. I have to because of my chronic fatigue. But I almost never fall asleep. And when I do fall asleep during the day it completely ruins me. Leaves me like a zombie for the rest of the day. Doesn’t matter if the nap is 10mins or 2hours, always the same. I’m just incapable of doing anything useful afterwards. And everyone I know always feels way worse if the nap during the day. I don’t know where all these people who are able to nap for predetermined lengths of time and then feel great afterwards are. I’ve never met one
