Delete the First/Last Word or Part from a Cell in Excel

Two powerful formulas that allow you to delete the first or last word or part from a cell in Excel.

I'll show you how to use these two formulas, how to change them to account for errors in the data set and how to change the formulas to work with your specific data set.

Once I show you how to adapt the formulas to your needs, I'll explain the formulas in-depth, covering every aspect of them, explaining the logic behind the formulas, breaking out the individual pieces of the formulas, explaining how everything works together, and, hopefully, giving you a better understanding of how text manipulation functions work in Excel and some of the tricks that are used to make them more powerful.

I hope you enjoy this text manipulation tutorial for Excel!

Wow! I’ve been searching for a site where formulas are broken down in this exact, step by step manner. I haven’t seen any other of your videos yet but if they are all explained as well as this one I will definitely be spending a lot less time figuring out how to combine the different functions. Thanks again

Getting to your pdf is challenging... So I just take the time to create my own file and follow along. Thank you for the video.

Great video. I use a formula to remove what I want, then I use substitute and use what I just took out to get the rest of it.

How did you initiate the RIGHT function? I didn't see you click anything, it just appeared. Are there shortcuts for it?

Hi.. cool tricks.. thanks for sharing them. Here are my solutions.. put together before watching your video: Remove first word: =REPLACE(TRIM(A2), 1, FIND(" ", A2), ""). Remove last word: =REPLACE(SUBSTITUTE(TRIM(A7), " ", "|", LEN(TRIM(A7))-LEN(TRIM(SUBSTITUTE(A7, " ", "")))), FIND("|", SUBSTITUTE(TRIM(A7), " ", "|", LEN(TRIM(A7))-LEN(TRIM(SUBSTITUTE(A7, " Always fun to get there in different ways. Thumbs up!!

Great tutorial, thanks for explanation, makes now a lot more sense to me although when you practice you can get behind the logic of formulas. I have tried to figure it out the way formula works without looking the end result of your tutorial, and succeeded although I have used LEFT(A1434, FIND(" ", A1434, 1+FIND(" ", A1434, FIND(" ", A1434)+1))) and =TRIM(LEFT(A1435, FIND("|", SUBSTITUTE(A1435, "-", "|", LEN(A1435)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1435, "-", ""))))-1)). Please do post more videos on Text function in Excel. Thanks

Thank you so much. You save me hours of work.

It kind of gets a bit tricky when you are working on a file with num/letter combination and if the last word you need to remove is actually two words. I.E. employee numbers/ID.

I.E. CHN 012345 or Employee Name CHN 012345

John Clements Davis CHN 012
