I question if a polygraph would work on me or anyone with anxiety issues. If I were totally innocent and they asked me "did you kill the old lady and rob her?", I'd tense up just out of fear that it would be read as a lie.

Guys who singularly buy into the accuracy of a polygraph are the professional equivalent of gals that buy into horoscopes.

They could be completely wrong and way off the mark, but their own biases will convince them otherwise.

If you find yourself in the hot seat taking a polygraph. Tell the truth. Most polygraph administrators don’t know what all the data is that they have gathered. A polygraph is only going to give the administrator information on how your body is doing during certain periods of questioning. There is no pass or fail of the polygraph. The administrator will consult with others and determine if they believe you are an usable resource or they will send you a letter saying something to the effect, “we regret to inform that our data shows that you may not be the best candidate for this situation. That’s in the case of a pre-employment polygraph. Using a polygraph to test the validity of a person who may have committed a crime is even less accurate and why they cannot be used in the US courts without extreme prejudice.

The polygraph is complete bs learned this after personal experiences, the machine is basically a prop for the operator, the operator makes a determination of lie or truth either by training, bias or whim. My father was a LEO that took part of a research program to determine the reliability of the polygraph machine to be used in court, the operator failed to prove it was reliable. I later had to take a lie detector test for a job, it was by the same operator who was big in the industry. I was told I’d be given the test three times, he the operator recognized my last name and wanted to know if I was related to the guy in the program I said yes he’s my father after the first test ok your done you failed.
